Day 5. Østerklit Stokmølle to Skagen

A journey to the tip of Denmark via the eerie sand dunes of Råbjerg Mile

34.4km, 39m climb, easy

Description

About halfway along this short day is Råbjerg Mile, another dune system, but this time in land. The route tracks the south side of this and gives a few possibilities for climbing the dunes to take in the weird views. After that it is some asphalt tracks, cycle paths through heath land before arriving in the most Northerly town in Denmark, Skagen.

To me Skagen is two places. Firstly there’s “real” Skagen which is the main town with fishing harbour and a lot of life (we were there during a music festival that had taken over the centre of town); there’s plenty of places to stay and more importantly eat well in “real” Skagen… I’d recommend heading down to the harbour area for one of the seafood places.

The other part of Skagen is the original summer house area on the north west coast (it is only a couple of km between the coasts here at the tip of Denmark). Its here that the wealthier residents and offspring of Copenhagen gather during summer for socialising.

The other great attraction in Skagen is a few km to the North of town at Grenen where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas come together.

Overnight

There’s dozens of places in Skagen and Gammel Skagen along with a bunch of campsites.
