Day 2. Hantsholm to Svinkløv
An adventure bike tour taking in some amazing food experiences in North West Denmark
61.2km, 204m climb, easy
Description
Today’s route leaves Hantsholm along the coast following an off-road track through the dune cliffs. Then its along gravel tracks in the open heathland all the way up to Bulbjerg, which is the only rock cliff in Jutland. Worth a few minutes of detour.
For us the weather was closing in fast at this point: heavy thunderstorms are relatively common during the summer so we took off quickly towards Thorup Strand taking a very brief shortcut on some single track down towards the beach.
Thorup Strand is still working as a fishing port where the boats are pulled up onto the beach. I can really recommend Thorupstrand Fiskehus for some outstanding seafood: the fish and chips were great.
As the rain subsided we moved on along the asphalt Havvejen and then through the forest at Kollerup Plantage on gravel tracks before arriving at the campsite, Svinkløv Campking.
Overnight
We stayed at Svinkløv Camping, even upgrading to a “glamping tent” since it was still very very wet and we weren’t up for setting up the tent.
The main alternative is Svinkløv Badehotel which is an absolute classic Danish bathing hotel. Fully restored after being completely gutted by fire in 2016, it is a sublime building, perfectly suited for the long flat light that comes with Danish summers. The food there is also first class, we had the dinner menu which was mainly seafood in the usual Nordic cuisine style.
